HMB is a metabolite of the essential amino acid leucine that plays an anticatabolic role in muscle tissue. In addition to preventing muscle protein breakdown, HMB may help improve strength and muscle mass in older adults, but evidence of a benefit for athletes is lacking.

Examine says no proof of benefit “for athletes”.

Does HMB do anything different than Leucine?

Per Examine:

For the purpose of muscle protein synthesis (MPS), HMB and leucine are fairly equivalent , although the latter (leucine) may be more potent on a per-gram basis. Supplementing with HMB is not advised for inducing muscle protein synthesis, since leucine is likely more effective as well as cheaper.

HMB for younger, trained athletes apparently does nothing. It does appear to be helpful in older adults like me, for preventing sarcopenia. It appears to be better than leucine. Both leucine and HMB are fairly nasty tasting. They will ruin a good smoothy. I just bite the bullet and mix the HMB in a few ounces of water and drink it. I use HMB instead of leucine because it dissolves better in water.

“As HMB is said to be 20-fold more potent than leucine for this purpose, it is seen as equivalent to 20–60g of leucine supplementation.[1]”

My HMB was pretty flavourless, just a dry powder which I couldn’t swallow but needed to dissolve but not nasty at all

Excuse the brain fart.
As Emily Litella used to say: “Never mind”
I was mixing it up with my potassium BHB supplement.

an alternative for TRT is clomid. It raises your own testosteron production. Once you start TRT, it’s diffucult to stop because of the shut down of your own production

I had a bad experience with clomid, which is a combination of two isomers, zuclomiphene and enclomiphene. Clomid sent my testosterone levels into a tailspin, and it ended up below 200, so it doesn’t work for everyone. I also tried enclomiphene, which caused the opposite problem, sending my testosterone soaring from 200 to 1100. As long as I have a reliable and affordable source of TRT, I don’t care if my natural production shuts down. Reddit has some good information on both clomid and its isomers.

The study used:

There’s a burgeoning wine industry in Korea. It doesn’t use grapes but the fruit of Rubus coreanus, the equivalent of the western raspberry. Extracts of the waste products from this process boost the growth of chickens, researchers at Chonbuk National University discovered. The extracts cause an explosive rise in the concentrations of testosterone, growth hormone and melatonin.

May not be the same, but one can try the wine below.

I only had a glass. So I cannot say if it had any testosterone or growth hormone effects. It does taste good; coming from one with an uncultured palate (beer drinker).

Clomid raises my testosterone from 450 to 900 with 50mg every other day. My endrocrinologist convinced me to start with TRT and I did, but if I could go back, I would have stayed on clomid

The main reason I would choose clomid is because it has no effect on the prostate gland.

The main problem with tiger nuts is the challenge of harvesting them. =)

If you are concerned about your prostate, you should consider taking 2,5 mg tadalafil daily before bed, on an episode of the Drive of Peter Attia it was recommended by a prostate specialist. It also lower blood pressure a little bit

You can buy it as tiger nut flour at Amazon.

Yes, elders can increase muscle mass even tho we face anabolic resistance as we age. One key is to accept that adapt your protein intake accordingly. A young person taking 20 mg of protein after resistance training can expect muscle protein synthesis to occur and hypertrophy to follow. It will take 30 grams for a middle age person and 40 grams for a senior to mimic similar results. Johnmacc

Also, pubmed indicates only small help from dhea for improvement in body composition. Can you have your urologist give you a script for testosterone? Weekly 200 mg self dosing either subq or into glute muscle may be of significant help to you. Johnmacc

Correction. Weekly dosing of 100 not 200 mg may help. Johnmacc

When enclomiphene raised my level to above 1100, I was plagued by side effects, including acne, high BP, swollen feet and, by far the worst, anger and aggression.

When I started TRT, I was started on sustanon 250mg (a testosteron mix) every 2 weeks, and also had side effects; acne, high energy and aggression in the week after the injection. Dosage was reduced to 250mg every 3 weeks, then had low energy in third week after injection. I now use 1/4 of 250mg (62,5mg) every 4 days and have constant energy and almost no acne. Total testosteron around 900
