While I hope that RFK is able to tackle “big food” companies, as I agree that is likely a driving force behind much of the obesity epidemic in the US, I suspect the pushback from lobbyists will minimize his impact.

In other areas I’m doubtful…

While it may sound reasonable to let each individual choose whether or not to take a given vaccine, the public-health ramifications could be grave. Infectious diseases are quick to roar back into circulation when immunization falls below a certain level. In 2019, RFK Jr. visited the Pacific island of Samoa and amplified doubts about the safety of a measles vaccine. As already shaky vaccination rates continued to plummet after his visit, a measles outbreak ensued that killed 83 people, most of them children. Kennedy has denied that his visit there had anything to do with a decrease in vaccinations.

And, as I scroll through Twitter I come across more criticisms:

“RFK Jr. is the poster boy for the new Trump administration, a rich man who never has had to worry about a thing in his life, putting the lives of ordinary Americans in jeopardy because he thinks he knows better than scientists”

Let’s take his claims on fluoride as an example. RFK Jr. wrote on Xin early November: “Fluoride is an industrial waste associated with arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid disease.” Um—no. In high doses over prolonged periods of time—as with many other substances (even water and oxygen!)—exposure to fluoride can be a problem, but not in the small concentrations we see in drinking water. Lest we forget: Fluoride has been a bugaboo of the far right since the 1950s, when fluoridation was supposed to be part of a communist plot to take over America.

And since conspiracy theories know no borders, we can also look at a natural experiment up in Calgary, Canada, for further evidence. In 2011, Calgary’s’s city council banned fluoridation, and now is set to reintroduce it next year. Why? Because since fluoridation ended, cavities in children’s teeth have become more numerous and larger, often requiring treatment under general anesthesia and/or intravenous antibiotic therapy to fight infections associated with tooth decay. As one researcher at the University of Calgary has said, the decision to ban fluoridation had a clear result: It was a source of “avoidable and potentially life-threatening disease, pain, suffering, misery and expense…especially [for] very young children and their families.”

A level headed look by one of the smartest scientists around. Hint- RFKJ, if allowed, will kill a lot of Americans. Google “RFK Samoa Sri Lanka” for reference.

Please, please let’s keep this thread from getting too political by calling RFK names and such (even when some of us agree with such labels). It will quickly devolve to infighting, hard feelings and the thread will (justifiably) get shut down.

Call it the deep state, the swamp, the bureaucracy that is Washington DC, or the status quo. Any name you call it by, it is still terminally corrupt and self protecting. It is supposed to serve the people, us. It has morphed into a behemoth that serves first and foremost only itself. It routinely puts out hit pieces in media that is part of it. That’s what The Nation Article is about. Anyone that is a threat to us needs to be labeled a conspiracy theorist and destroyed. By any measure possible. Once you know this you can ignore all of that stuff.

Much of our food supply is junk. I don’t think that whoever coined the term “junk food” pulled it out of thin air. It describes most go what you see when you walk into a supermarket. Most of it is laced with crazy high amounts of sugar, salt, and poor quality fat. The FDA is in charge of keeping our food safe. They are not doing their job because big food pays them to not do their job. The FDA is one of the many corrupt swamp organizations. I would like to see it reformed. And I would rather not talk about Bobby Kennedy or any other individuals. The Federal Bureaucracy is a lot crazier than any individual. The crazy and incompetent individuals that make up that collective institution is evident by their results.

There are a lot of smart people on this forum. I would prefer that we stick to health!

Here’s the thing for people worried about RFK’s vaccine stance (which is not anti-vaccine btw)
That train left the station in 2021.
A few years back my son became an anti-vaxxer and we had vehement debates as I thought that was a dumb stance
After the Covid vax fiasco, I no longer trust the government and have become super skeptical of all vaxes. There are probably millions like me who stopped trusting vaxes because the gov and big pharma Effed this up so badly
RFK is more like to restore peoples faith in vaccines because right now it can only go up

It is not nonsense, actually. The covid vaccines were initially tested quite well in RCTs but with an endpoint of symptomatic infection rather than, say, hospitalization or death. But it was an emergency and no issues with that decision at that time. But they unblinded the trial at 2 months, which was very unfortunate from a science point of view.

Later testing for the boosters was for surrogate markers for health - antibodies - rather than health outcomes like hospitalization and death. This was less defendable and somewhat unfortunate.

Most vaccines have NOT been tested against placebos, believe it or not. This shocked me but apparently it is true. I understand the vaccines often are mixed with an adjuvant that preserves the drug. The adjuvant is immunologically inert but not necessarily biologically inert. So it could itself cause some issues, in theory. And if it does so, you would never know from the trials, as both arms of the trials had the adjuvant.

Anyway, long story short: it can’t hurt to invest more money in this area and do some additional science and testing. We can get additional proof of the safety and efficacy of the various vaccines, and reassure people. Or maybe we learn something and optimize our schedules a bit. Either way, it is worth funding.

No one is worrying about contracting small pox and that vaccine is not even on the schedule anymore.

The vaccine absolutism is incredible. Is the schedule we have right now absolutely optimal? Probably not. Do we want many or most vaccines to be universally available and widely used? Yes, definitely. Do kids ages 6 months and up need annual covid shots for the next 18 years as per the current recommendations in the US? The evidence for this is lacking, which is probably why most of our peer nations don’t recommend it.

But many hear any concern with any vaccine recommendation, or any desire to study and optimize the schedule of vaccine administration as a desire to eliminate all vaccines. It is so weird. It seems like there are weird, almost religious, anti-vax nutjobs on one side, and then also weird, almost religious, pro-vaccine nutjobs on the other side.

You are correct. This comment is very solid.

It would be ok if we were just watching the movie Titanic, when in this case it’s more analogous to being ON the Titanic.

I agree with you except that it is NEVER the case. The opposite (i.e. the one running marathons is also a brilliant cardiologist, while the one that smokes is probably the other example) is usually true.

edit: this is in response to Cronos Tempi’s message below: Kudos to your friend and all those that are leaving the country, smart move. I can’t myself (for financial :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: and other reasons) but wish you’d do the same as your friend, why wait and risk it?

Well, yes, that’s a pesky detail. But I assume any sensible passenger on our current Titanic has contracted with a rescue service as insurance :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:, in this case, being in possession of a second citizenship and passport. I have a close Jewish friend, who traces his roots far into the past. As he says, his family survived through the ages, because they always had an instinct for when things are really dangerous, and they’d flee well ahead of time and get well established elsewhere, when others still didn’t realize how dangerous things are until it was too late. The danger is always unexpectedly sudden going from “eh, the usual troubles”, to “help!”. They came to America already in 1935. All their friends who stayed in Germany and other parts of Europe, perished. They warned them, but their friends were all, “eh, we’ve seen worse, he’s just a loudmouth, we’ll survive”. By 1945, they were all dead. That mustachioed loudmouth also made promises, and people dismissed it as “can’t be serious, just talk”. Now there is again “talk” and again people are saying “nah”… when someone tells you who they are, believe them.

Anyhow, that friend visited me just this weekend, and said, he feels it’s time, his danger sense is triggered - he’s moving his family to Portugal for now. It’s like an early alarm bell, before anything is clear yet to others, he doesn’t care if people make fun of him “scarridy cat”. Another friend is making preparations for Canada. I’m staying put, but I have the option of moving to Europe at the ready. For now, I’m watching the spectacle from close up, it’s exciting to be a witness to history being made, being right in the middle to see it all. I can say “I was right there! Nobody believed it was possible! Not in America!”. America has always been the refuge from danger in other parts of the world, it’s fascinating to see, for the first time in history, the reverse process, where people are looking to flee from America to other parts of the world. This is true history in the making, an inflection point in the history of our great and wonderful nation, where future historians will point to as the key moment - very exciting.

Meanwhile, it’s been over a month and my package from India is still stuck. I’m trying to accumulate a good stash to get me through any future restrictions, as I feel customs is going to become really active, especially if insane tariffs are introduced, then retaliatory tariffs from others and so on. Better get the stuff you need sooner rather than wait until getting things through the post becomes dicey, policy can change on a dime. Mini fridge, and a stash of medication ftw.

Australia or New Zealand anyone?
