An interesting thought which I googled.

It appears that dopamine is a hormone of the day. I have tended to supplement melatonin at night. I have twice taken over a gram during the day and I also take 200mg when I start drinking (to reduce the harm of acetaldehyde).

I would think this is potentially an argument to supplement at night.

Thats interesting re alcohol!

When it comes to Alcohol, however, Pantethine and DHM are also worth taking.

I take 3mg every night… mainly for my digestive system… I have silent reflux and melatonin somewhat helps… I have taken up to 15 mg… but at higher doses I had the impression it lowered my libido… maybe that is the link to dopamine…

However, I am on trt and libido is a complex issue and might not have been at all related to melatonin.

There is a lot of melatonin in our digestive system… Melatonin is part of my quest to fix my reflux issues… lol Oh, and melatonin does not make me sleepy… I have interrupted sleep, wake up 3 to 8 times a night… but get back to sleep right away… been like this for years… would love to fix that, but I was told it is like that with age.

I also have silent reflux and use melatonin partly for the same reason.

Nowadays, I manage without medication (PPI) as long as I take care of my diet and sleep in an adjustable bed.

I read yesterday that melatonin boosts prolactin. Surely this is a bad thing and especially for men? Melatonin’s actions are not limited to sleep - PMC.

Please give a link to this.

Thanks for the link. AIUI this could reduce testosterone. As far as i concerned i have higher testosterone than average without supplementation. Obviously people need to monitor their biomarkers.

In fact I find one of my labs tests for prolactin and I have looked at the results and they are all in the normal range. Hence much that this is possibly something to watch for I am comfortable that even with me taking grams of the stuff my prolactin is normal and testosterone at the top end of normal.

Hi John yes it seems melatonin is protective of prostrate health from all my reading today. Was a bit disappointed though I read that high dose melatonin is sleep-disruptive in postmenopause - which is mainly why I take it and had thought of going higher. I have very fragmented sleep though I do not feel tired. I am taking melatonin with PEA (palmitoylethanomide ) at the moment as an add on anti inflammatory - or I use full spectrum CBD and Ecklonia Cava

A lot depends on when you take it. Because the HPA cycle is only around 90 minutes then the timing within that cycle is quite critical.

Perhaps the most important role of Melatonin is protecting mitochondrial DNA.

Are you on HRT Michelle? Progesterone does wonder for sleep… My GF sleeps like a baby …

I have 5 children. None of them slept that well as babies. Now sleeps like a teenager is something I can relate to.

Hi no. Am 63 and I am not on HRT. Weirdly I sleep really well on a quarter of Zyrtec and low dose melatonin past few nights. CBN also works. I have to be careful with exogenous hormones as I have an acoustic neuroma (and new theories around tumors and estrogen. In fact one proposed drug was Mifpresterone a progesterone blocker). Am healthy over all- was vax injured for two years and post Covid again- but we wont go there lol!
