The problem isn’t limited to fly-by-night phonies lurking in some dark corner of the internet either. The New York State attorney general commissioned DNA testing of seventy-eight bottles of commercial herbal supplements sold by GNC, Walgreens, Target, and Walmart, and four out of five bottles didn’t contain any of the herbs listed on their labels. Instead, the capsules often contained little more than cheap fillers, such as powdered rice and “houseplants.”6696
At least you hope it’s just houseplants. Some supplements are tainted with pharmaceuticals—sometimes even banned substances that had already been yanked from the market. As I note in see.nf/adulterated, recalled supplements may pop right back on store shelves, sometimes with even more banned ingredients.6697 As a founding fellow of the Institute for Science in Medicine put it, “Fines for violations are small compared to the profits.”6698
PAYING TO CUT YOUR LIFE SHORT?
A nationally representative sample of thousands of Americans over the age of sixty found that 70 percent reported using dietary supplements.6699 Perhaps that should be 100 percent, since the Institute of Medicine’s official recommendation is for everyone fifty and older to take a B12 supplement (or consume foods fortified with B12),6700 but the most common supplement taken was a multivitamin. What might that do for our lifespan?

NMN supplements may not even have NMN in the first place. ChromaDex, which sells a rival supplement, Tru Niagen (a form of NR), claims to have tested the twenty-two NMN brands with the highest market share on Amazon.com and found that most had NMN levels below the limit of detection, so virtually none at all.8266 Ironically, many of the apparently fake NMN products displayed a “certificate of analysis” and carried hundreds or even thousands of positive reviews.8267 Evidently, only three out of twenty-two were found to contain as much NMN as advertised on their labels. Of course, ChromaDex isn’t above being shady itself; it’s been accused of making hyped false claims for Tru Niagen by both the FDA8268 and the Better Business Bureau.8269

I’ve been given the chance to put samples of something into a SEM/AFM, does anyone want to make suggestions? Like rapamycin pills?
[if nothing else I might do an apple or tea sample]. Or a canagliflozin or acarbose sample.
The broken version of the Pfizer rapamycin and the Zydus or Biocon rapamycin would be interesting (Pfizer uses nano-crystal technology so should be quite different).

well it would be nice to send teabag samples… of plastic-containing vs non-plastic containing ones. Not critical tho, I tend to make ALL tea looseleaf…
but also samples of highly-MP contaminated foods…
