The original idea of 10,000 steps I believe was pulled out of thin air in a Fitbit board room.

The original article does say that up to 20,000 is an improvement. After that point may be negative.
In the run-up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, marketing executives in Japan decided on the idea of walking 10,000 steps a day as part of a campaign to promote a new pedometer. Ever since then, it has been touted as a magical number for staying fit and healthy.

I think I can manage 2337 steps, maybe even 2338.

Actually it was made up in Japan due to the character for 10,000 looking something like a walking person.

“A new study finds that benefits begin to accrue at 4,000 steps per day, with a 9-39% reduction in the risk for all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality; dementia, and even depressive symptoms.”
Thanks, I needed that, as my daily step count is between 5000 and 6000 steps/day.
