Just get organic oranges and eat the peel

It’s a lot to handle if grapefruit. Just tiny nibbles

I eat avocado peel but it has NOTHING on orange peels…

Orange peels are nature’s ozempic

I don’t know if citrus peel is nature’s ozempic, but I have been consuming citrus peel daily for a little bit over two years now. The amounts are: usually peel from two mandarins plus one quarter of peel from one orange. I don’t know what the exact effects are, but no effect on weight or appetite (I’ve always been slim though). It does seem to possibly help with keeping me regular, though I’ve always been regular. No grapefruit peel.

I meant to eat the grapefruit peel this last weekend but I forgot. I will do it eventually just to claim I’m a crazy mofo

Lol, you’re a stronger man than I am! Grapefruit is a bridge too far for me. I did some research on citrus peels, which is why I eat them (gastrointestinal health, anti-cancer etc.), but I have not come across much data about grapefruit peel.

Then what are you doing it for? What are the benefits?

There is a lot of research showing benefits of citrus peel consumption for cancer, intestinal health, GERD and so on

but I take it for skin health. I’m of northern european extraction, and have had several episodes of extensive sunburn as a kid (vacations in Greece and falling asleep at the beach etc.). I now live in sunny Southern California. In 2011 I had to have a small BCC removed from my back, and thankfully nothing since, but have to have a full derma exam every 6 months. Apparently citrus peel consumption is associated with less skin cancer:

Given that with age the rates of skin cancer go up drastically, I try to do all I can to prevent it (clothing cover, sunglasses, wide-brim hat), through diet and supplements (lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin). I do consume citrus fruit daily (one mandarin, half an orange), but avoid juices as these can have a bad effect on skin cancer.

Not sure about healthy, but when I was googling information about grapefruit - trying to figure out how to maximise rapamycin absorbtion - i came across information that the peels contain high amounts of furanocoumarins.

This study found that a water extract of orange peels, feruloylputrescine, significantly inhibits the enzyme responsible for producing TMA, and thus TMAO.
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jafc.3c09005
Note that Choline, carnitine, and BCAA are converted to trimethylamine (TMA) by intestinal bacteria, which is then absorbed and converted by the liver into TMAO, a substance which ends up causing inflammation, and has been linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Now and again i eat a whole lime, but am careful to rinse my teeth afterwards to clear the naked protons. (H+ ions, acid)

Also if my wife gets a slice of lemon or lime in a drink she lets me eat it whole (inc peel)

There was an interesting paper recently pointing to aging being linked to an increase in naked protons.

OTOH a couple of protons dressed appropriately in a couple of electrons has merit (Molecular Hydrogen).

BUT, tracking down I found this:

“With help from a $500,000 USDA grant, Yu Wang and her team investigated the potential of orange peel extracts – rich in beneficial phytochemicals – to reduce TMAO and trimethylamine (TMA) production. Scientists tested two types of extracts: a polar fraction and a non-polar fraction.”

Florida. USDA grant. Proceed with caution.

Are not the peels heavily treated with pesticides, since they are not considered for consumption?
How do you deal with that issue?
And do you eat the whole peel, given that peel still has at least two layers, the white inside below the colored outside?

Just yesterday @Bicep recommended Pectasol. I had never heard of it or the concept of eating citrus peels. I assume pectasol is for a similar benefit.

I’ve not done more than zest a lemon, but I am imaging whole peels don’t taste very good. Easy enough to try.

Pectasol is the brand name for a modified citrus pectin product (MCP). There are studies indicating that it is anti-metastatic.

There have been studies for prostate, colon, and breast cancer.

Truly incredible, thank you for that.

It seems like a no brainer, correct?

Bicep seemed very excited about it, so I was already sold. I just wanted to search before ordering to make sure there was no downside I could find

We discussed MCP in the thread below. Bicep is/was using it for chelation. I posted a recipe by one who styles herself as the Biblical Nutritionist.

The “prime suspect” for the benefit is salvestrol.

However, the compound tends to be produced at higher levels when infection levels among crops are high.

Therefore, the use of modern pesticides and fungicides, which have cut the risk of infections, have also led to a drop in Salvestrol levels in food.

So best to use organic citrus to use their peels.

Thank you.

I just watched the video.
Have you made this, and if so, how does it taste?

I throw away so many peels that the drink would obviously be more appealing than the capsules, but it would have to taste decent for my wimpy self.

If it helps anyone else:
Use the peels of 6 grapefruits, lemons, oranges and/or tangerines. You need at least two types and any combo is fine. (I’d personally skip grapefruit due to potential drug interactions)
Use 3 cups of water and simmer for 3 hours.

I made it. It has a slight tolerable bitter taste. Initially, I took them like a shot of liquor, chased with water. No pain no gain.

I, later mixed it into some 100% cranberry juice, sweetened with glycine. Tastes like some mixed alcoholic drink.

You can also make orange peel tea, like the guy in the link below. I might try that, because he dried and ground the peel into powder; more convenient for storage.

The girl in the link below just steeps the peel with some loose leaf tea, and drinks the tea. She titles the vid as “Chinese beauty secret”.

I have several citrus trees in my yard which I tend all organically, grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime. I’m going to delve in to this. So it is the whole peel rather than just the white soft lining inside that as the bio-favorable effects?

I think it’s the whole peel. I saw one of those papers a while back. I started grating lemon/lime or orange peel into porridge, stews, curries, which seems to be fine.

This works well: it actually adds a bit of zest to many foods.

I have been just eating the peel of “easy peeler” oranges. OK, it’s a bit of an acquired taste but I’ve got used to it.

I think you need the MCP because it’s modified properly by ph and heat and will block galectin 3. It’s cheap, safe and acts in 3 ways that improve odds of living longer and stronger. The problem is keeping your enthusiasm over time. You don’t feel it like MB or Keto salts or caffeine. You gotta have faith in the science. Not my strong suit either unless I’m doing it myself, but this one seems to work.
